Iowa (RI) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate says election officials are reviewing ways to improve the early voting experience after some voters encountered lengthy lines during this year’s election cycle.

According to Pate, about 70% of Iowans who voted early cast their ballots in person, either at county auditors’ offices or sattelite voting locations.

Pate says county officials may consider several options before the 2028 election, including adding more satellite voting sites or adjusting the layout of auditor offices to better handle large crowds.

Pate cites Polk County as an example, which has 170 voting precincts.

Over 70,000 people voted early in Polk County, while nearly 40,000 cast early ballots in Linn County.

Statewide, nearly 500,000 Iowans voted during the 20-day early voting period before Election Day. About 45% of those ballots were cast by Democrats, 34% by Republicans, and 20% by independent voters.
