Des Moines, Iowa (RI) — The Iowa Pork Producers Association is planning what it calls a “Pork Chop Salute” on the first Sunday of the Iowa State Fair to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
Spokesperson Hope Becht says the giveaway is designed to match the symbolism of 1776.
One free pork chop will be handed out per person on the north side of the Pork Tent building until they reach the 1776 mark. Becht says the pork chop on a stick has been a favorite since it was introduced.
The Pork Tent has also become part of the fair’s political history, with dignitaries and public figures taking turns as honorary grillers.
Politicians are often interviewed by state and national media as they flip chops on the grill, and many visit with fairgoers afterward.
