(KIWA Staff Photo)Sheldon, Iowa — A Sanborn man has been arrested on a felony OWI charge in Sheldon.
A criminal complaint filed by the Sheldon Police Department in district court accuses 35-year-old Charles Van Veldhuizen of Sanborn of drunk driving for the third or subsequent time.
In his statement, the officer says someone called law enforcement to tell them about someone who they thought was driving while intoxicated. They said they followed the vehicle in question to Crossroads Plaza, and that’s where the officer encountered Van Veldhuizen. The officer says Van Veldhuizen did have the odor of an alcoholic beverage, bloodshot and watery eyes, and dilated pupils. The officer says he also failed field sobriety tests, but refused to submit to a PBT.
Van Veldhuizen was charged with operating while intoxicated, third or subsequent offense. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 5th.
Van Veldhuizen was booked into the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar and was released the next day after posting a surety bond.
