In old business were the public hearings for the Sheldon Crossing Housing Incentive and the changes to the City and Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation relationship. After a number of comments and much discussion on both issues, the council voted unanimously to table both issues. Most of the comments on the housing issue, which would authorize seven lots in the Sheldon Crossing Addition to be sold for one dollar apiece, were that it wouldn’t be fair to those who have recently purchased a lot. Council member Ken Snyder said that most of the people he had talked to were against the measure. Council member Brad Hindt says he had the exact opposite experience, and that most of the people he talked to were for the measure. Council members were also interested in some changes to the housing measure, including possibly adding a provision to create a stipulation that the homes have to be built by local contractors. It was said that in order to have influence on the lots, the SCDC relationship issue had to be tabled until the housing issue is worked out.
In new business, the council approved Mayor Greg Geels’ appointment of Sergeant and Interim Chief Eric Meinecke to the Chief of Police position. Meinecke will be sworn in on November 20th.
The council also approved an agreement with Cayler Consulting to assist with a vacancy that will occur when Meinecke becomes chief. The main issue is a test needs to be given that no one in the department is authorized to give, so Cayler is going to help with that.
