Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council met in regular session on Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers.
They approved the consent agenda.
In new business, the council received a report from O’Brien County Economic Development Director Kiana Johnson. They approved an engineering agreement for the North 5th Avenue Lift Station Relocation Project and a pay estimate for the Wyman & 16th Street Drainage Project. They also approved a change order and a pay estimate on the West Park Street and D Street Drainage Project.
The council discussed a nuisance at 315 West 8th Street with City Attorney Micah Schreurs. Schreurs told the council why he was there.
The council decided to abate the nuisance and seek recoupment of 100% of the abatement costs: The Court, anticipating that the owners may not comply with the forty-five-day deadline for the abatement, ordered that “the City is authorized to demolish and remove the nuisance at [the owners’] cost” after the deadline. The move will require another trip to court, according to Schreurs.
The City had received a letter signed by ten concerned citizens on East 6th Street. They feel the speed is too fast on that street and that there should be a sidewalk on the north side of 6th Street.
The council decided that increased enforcement would be attempted first, with the speed limit to stay at 25 mph for now, as Police Chief Eric Meinecke and Public Works Director Todd Uhl felt it was appropriate.
The council then went into closed session in regard to a potential purchase of land. When they came back into open session, they reported that no formal decisions had been made.
They also received zoning and code enforcement reports.
Public Works Director and Interim Co-City Manager Todd Uhl says that the Highway 18 closure will have to extend into Saturday morning.
