Sioux Center, Iowa (Sioux County Radio) — A Sioux Center man has been arrested on a felony charge alleging he failed to properly update information required by the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Robert Leroy Benton was arrested Wednesday following an investigation into his registry status.

Benton is cited for providing false information to the sex offender registry, second or subsequent offense, a Class D felony.

A criminal complaint filed Oct. 8th alleges Benton was no longer living at the address on file with the sheriff’s office as of Oct. 2nd. Investigators allege he failed to report his new address within the required three-business-day period.

The sheriff’s office says the arrest Wednesday was connected to that complaint.

According to court records, the repeat-offense charge is based in part on a June 2022 conviction in Colleton County, South Carolina, for failing to comply with sex offender registry requirements.

Jail records indicate Benton was transported to the Sioux County Jail and later released Oct. 28th after posting a $5,000 surety bond.
