Lake Park, Iowa (KUOO) — New estimates for repairs to the Lake Park swimming pool have city officials reassessing what comes next for the facility.

Mayor Matt Carstensen says an engineering firm specializing in swimming pools recently reviewed the site, including virtual tours and core samples, and determined repair costs would be significantly higher than originally expected.

Carstensen says Iowa law would require voter approval for a project of that size, and the earliest such a vote could be held would be next November.

City officials are now considering their next steps, including the possibility of forming a community steering committee to help explore options.

Carstensen says constructing a new pool on the existing site could cost about $5 million.

He says the city council is just as surprised by the new figures as the rest of the community, but they’re still hopeful to find some type of water recreation option for Lake Park residents in the future.
