(KIWA Staff Photo)Iowa (RI) — A new study suggests speeding has become routine for many Iowa drivers.
AAA Iowa spokeswoman Brynna Knapp says the research found that going well above the posted limit is increasingly viewed as normal behavior.
Knapp says one of the biggest reasons people speed is simply not wanting to get stuck behind slower drivers.
According to the study, 31% of respondents cited getting around slower drivers, while 25% said they speed to reach their destination more quickly. Drivers also said they’re more likely to slow down for bad weather, to avoid a crash, or to avoid a ticket.
Still, Knapp says many motorists believe there’s a cushion before police will pull them over.
The study also found more than 90% of drivers believe speed bumps are effective, though fewer than half support installing them in their own neighborhoods. Drivers favor warning systems that alert them when they’re speeding, but not technology that would actively limit a vehicle’s speed.
