Sibley, Iowa — The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office has just released a report about a crash near Sibley in which two people from Allendorf were taken to the hospital on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 5:45 p.m., 27-year-old Luke Stover of Sheldon was driving a 2010 Lincoln southbound on Nettle Avenue, two miles north of Sibley and three west, or four miles east of Little Rock on Highway 9. They tell us that 72-year-old Mark Helmers of Allendorf was eastbound on Highway 9 in a 2025 Chevy pickup.
The report says that Stover failed to stop at the stop sign and continued into the path of the Helmers pickup. The Helmers pickup struck the Stover vehicle in the passenger side doors, causing both units to go out of control and come to rest in the ditch on the southeast corner of the intersection. The Stover car came to rest on its wheels after overturning in the ditch facing essentially south. The Helmers pickup came to rest on its passenger side, facing southeast.
Helmers and his passenger, 71-year-old Denise Helmers of Allendorf, were extricated by mechanical means and treated at the scene before the Osceola County Ambulance took them to Osceola Regional Health Center Hospital. Stover denied any injuries and declined any treatment on the scene.
Stover’s Lincoln sustained $12,000 in damages, and Helmers’s Chevy pickup sustained $20,000 in damages. Both were considered totaled.
Stover was charged with failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right-of-way.
