Shirley Petitt De Boer

Shirley Petitt De Boer, age 85, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon. Rev. Craig Nissen officiating. Burial to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, September 12, from 3:30 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.

Shirley Frances De Boer was born on June 25, 1929 in Trent, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Anthony Rudolf and Rose Margaret (Schnee) Vonderharr. She lived her youth on a family farm in Trent, attended a country school and St. Mary’s Academy in Del Rapids, South Dakota, graduating in 1947.

She married Grover “Bud” Petitt of Sheldon, Iowa on March 26, 1949. To this union four sons were born. Shirley and Bud later divorced.

Shirley worked at home taking care of her four sons, later working at Ray’s Bowl Café, Alfs Manufacturing, East Elementary School in the lunch room, and Bogaard and Lyons Cleaners, retiring in 1993. She attended the Church of Christ in Sheldon.

She married Louis S. De Boer of Boyden, Iowa on February 14, 1975, they lived in rural Boyden until Louis became ill and then moved to Sheldon. Louis passed away on August 14, 1990. She attended the Presbyterian Church in Boyden.

Shirley enjoyed sewing, doing mending and alterations, quilting, and solving word find puzzles. She was very independent and enjoyed the simple things in life. Her family was very important to her.

She passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Those left to cherish her memories are her four sons: Gary and Donna Petitt of Sheldon, IA, Edward and Rhonda Petitt of Boyden, IA, Scott and Natasha Petitt of Sutherland, IA, Keith and Tiffany Petitt of Sheldon, IA; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Louis S. De Boer; her parents; brother: Anthony Vonderharr and sister: Darlene (Joe) Friedmann.
