Ames Iowa — MOC Floyd Valley graduate now Iowa State middle blocker Alexis Conaway was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.
The conference made the announcement Monday afternoon. Conaway, a senior, earned the award for the first time in 2017, and the second time in her career. Conaway’s Big 12 DPOW award is the 48th picked up by Iowa State in the history of the award. The next-highest total in the conference is 21.
Conaway led the Cyclone front line during a 2-0 weekend at the Iowa Invitational. In ISU’s four-set Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series win over Iowa on Friday night, Conaway recorded a season-best eight blocks, the highest total by a player in the Big 12 last week. She followed that up with two blocks in two sets of work against Northern Illinois.
For the weekend, Conaway’s 10 blocks at 1.67 per set ranked atop the conference. On the season, Conaway ranks second in the Big 12 and 25th nationally with her 1.48 blocks per set. ISU is ninth in the country with its 3.12 blocks per frame.
Conaway and the Cyclones return to action Tuesday night against UNI. First serve between the Cyclones and Panthers will be at 6:30 p.m.
