Big Second Quarter Gives Dordt Push To Victory

The Dordt Defender football team went on a 31 point run in the second quarter and start of the third quarter to win a 55-17 decision from Hastings on the road Saturday.

Neither team got much offense in the first quarter with Hastings breaking through with a field goal on the final play of the period for a 3-0 lead.

Dordt’s offense got started with a seven play, 65 yard drive capped with a Matthew Oh-Slack touchdown grab of 12 yards delivered by Brock Lamle on the ensuing drive.

A Jordan Weiland interception on the next possession gave Dordt a short field and four plays was all the Defenders needed with Levi Schoonhoven scoring on an eight yard run for a 14-3 lead.

Brett Gaines made the first of two field goals on the next drive, a 27 yarder that split the uprights and Schoonhoven ran in from two yards out to cap the first half scoring at 24-3.

Nathan Kabongo put the game out of reach with a 34 yard interception return for a touchdown on the first drive of the second half and The Defenders added touchdown runs of one and two yard by Keithen Drury later in the quarter.

Schoonhoven got one more touchdown on a six yard plunge with 12:45 left in the game and Brett Gaines converted a season long 34 yard field goal into the wind for the final score with 4:24 left in the game.

Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday, September 29 and takes a 2-1 overall record and 1-1 GPAC mark into the game.
