Sioux Center, Iowa — Dordt swept Northwestern with a 5-3 game one decision, and took game two with a 3-2 come from behind victory on Tuesday in Sioux Center.
Dordt never trailed and held on for a 5-3 win over Northwestern in game one of their doubleheader.
The Defenders got out of a jam in the second inning when Northwestern had a runner thrown out at third base with one out and left another runner on third base as the inning came to a close.
Dordt scored two runs on three hits and an error in the second inning with Brooklyn Van Oort doubling in a run and Natalie Vos had a sacrifice fly that scored another.
Northwestern threatened again in the third inning but they stranded a runner at third base again as Emily Bosch was caught stealing to end the inning.
Both teams had chances to score in the next frames as Dordt left two stranded in the third and Northwestern left two on in the fourth and had another runner thrown out at home plate on a grounder to third.
The hosts added two in the fifth for a 4-0 lead as they took advantage of two errors and a couple of hits. De Roin had a sacrifice fly for one run and Natalie Vos singled in Van Oort for the second run.
Northwestern managed to make it close with three runs in the sixth inning on four hits but the inning ended with the potential tying run getting thrown out at home.
Leading 4-3, Dordt got a run for insurance when Marissa Vanden Berg scored on an error.
Northwestern got one runner on in the seventh inning but Tianna Soodsma was able to work around the runner on second to end the game.
The Dordt Defender won a come from behind decision in Game 2.
Dordt needed a two run bottom of the seventh to tie it and then won it with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Northwestern scored in the fourth inning and another in the top of the seventh for insurance to lead 2-0.
Dordt tied the game in the seventh after being held to one hit up to that point. Rachel Evavold started the inning with a single prompting a Northwestern pitching change. Hailey Heeringa followed with a single and Dordt had runners at the corners after Carley De Roin’s fielder’s choice. Another fielder’s choice followed with Brooklyn Van Oort hitting a grounder to first. Northwestern’s defense attempted to get Evavold at home but the run scored when Evavold beat the tag.
Abby Smith singled to send in De Roin and the score and the inning ended on a fly ball to right field. Northwestern had a runner on each of the eighth and ninth innings but came up empty. Dordt won the game with De Roin doubling to the opposite field and she was on second after the drive to the left field corner. Brooklyn Van Noort promptly lined a single to center field out of the reach of Northwestern’s outfielder and De Roin beat the throw home, scoring from second on the play.
Dordt is now 8-9 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC.
Northwestern is 7-12 and 0-2 in the GPAC.
