Yankton, South Dakota — The Dordt Defender baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision in game one of its doubleheader followed by a strong outing from Gyeongju Kim and put up eight runs in the first three innings on the way to a 13-8 victory at Mount Marty to get a split of the GPAC doubleheader in Yankton, South Dakota.with Mount Marty on Friday afternoon in Yankton, South Dakota.
In game one, the Lancers scored a run on two hits in the first inning and Dordt evened it with a run in the third as Nick Hamilton knocked in Andrew Pullar with a single. Dordt left two batters stranded in the inning.
Mount Marty then broke the deadlock with two runs on a hit in the bottom of the fourth inning on a homerun that stood up the rest of the way.
Dordt threatened and loaded the bases in the third but didn’t get the timely hit and the Defenders had two runners on in the sixth and another in the seventh but the rally attempts were squashed on each occasion.
Chase Edwards was 3-4 with a double and two singles.
Andrew Pullar was 3-3 with a run scored and Logan Cline was 2-3 with a bases on balls.
Logan Horne pitched four and a third innings and was charged with three runs—two of them earned and Isaac Vander Hart pitched the final inning and two-thirds and struck out one without surrendering a hit.
In game two, Dordt scored three runs on three hits in the first inning and added three more on two hits in the second inning with Austin Pullar doubling for the second time in the game and he later came in to score. Two more runs on three hits in the third inning put the Defenders up 8-0.
Mount Marty got two in the fourth but Dordt answered with two in the fifth on three hits with Pullar knocking his third double of the game and Logan Cline followed with a two-run homerun.
Mount Marty managed two in the eighth but Dordt got three in the ninth and then held on as Mount Marty plated four in the bottom of the ninth to make the final 13-8.
Dordt had a 14-12 hits advantage and Austin Pullar was 4-5 at the plate with three doubles and a single and he scored five runs.
Logan Cline knocked in four runs and was a triple shy of the cycle while going 3-4 at the plate.
John Emerson was 2-5 with three runs batted in and Andrew Pullar was 2-4 with three runs.
Kim struck out eight and walked two while surrendering seven hits in six innings of work for his fifth win of the season.
Isaac Buteyn worked a scoreless seventh while Jadon Vander Molen and Caleb Pollema each worked a frame to finish off the game.
Dordt is 13-27 overall and 6-16 in the GPAC while Mount Marty is now 24-15 overall and 12-9 in the league.
The teams will play again on Saturday in Yankton starting at 1:00.
