Dordt Wins In Overtime Over Briar Cliff

Dordt College secured an overtime win and its sixth win of the season with a 36-30 win over the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon.

A defensive stop in the overtime set up Dordt’s win as Nic Byl and Connor Bosma were the first players there as Noah Ylagan got the call on fourth down and goal from the one on Briar Cliff’s first overtime possession.

After the stop Dordt faced third down at the eight yard line and Levi Jungling made a burst up the sideline on an option pitch to win it.

Dordt had success in the first quarter, moving the ball to the Briar Cliff seven but eventually turned it over on an interception.

The Dordt defense forced a punt and Dordt again moved the ball with ease on the next possession and went down the field for a 55 yard drive as Brock Lamle completed a 24 yard pass play to Jake Dodge for the score.

Briar Cliff scored on the next three possessions on drives of 69, 62 and 17 yards with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal for a 16-7 lead.

Brett Gaines got Dordt back on the board with a 30 yard field goal with 5:49 left in the half for a 16-10 difference but Briar Cliff scored on a 67 yard pass play moments later to lead 23-10.  Dordt answered immediately with Keithen Drury reeling in a screen pass to cut the lead again to 23-17.

Jalen Placide picked off his first pass of the season late in the half near midfield and on the last play of the half Gaines hit his second field goal, this one a 36 yard attempt to cut it to 23-20.

A defensive stop by Dordt gave the Defenders the ball and Jake Dodge was on the receiving end of another pass, this one from five yards for a 27-23 lead and Dordt settled for a field goal later, this one from 20 yards to make it 30-23 late in the third.

Briar Cliff scored early in the fourth quarter on a Ylagan score to knot it and both teams were held with out a score the rest of regulation.  Briar Cliff did threaten by Casey Byker picked off his fifth pass of the season to keep the Defenders in contention.
