Sheldon Iowa — Estherville Lincoln Central scored the game winner in the bottom of the 6th inning then held Sheldon scoreless in the top of seven for a 4-3 win in the quarterfinals of Class 3A Region 2 Wednesday night. With the win E-LC will be at Boyden Friday night in a semi final against Boyden Hull Rock Valley who ousted George Little Rock Central Lyon 10-2. We’ll bring you that broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3.
Rylee Miller opened the bottom of the sixth with a walk. Mya Gjerde pinch running for Miller scored from second on a single to right by Brooke Vermeys. That put the Midgets up for good 4-3. The Orabs were held scoreless in the top of the seventh and E-LC had the win.
Sheldon opened the scoring in the first inning as lead off hitter Nicole Johnson opened with a line drive single to center. She would eventually score from third on a line drive to right by Alexa Van Den Hull.
The Midgets score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to go up 2-1. Olivia Troug led off with a fly ball to the fence in right center for a double. After a sacrifice bunt Hallie Jensen reached on a base on balls. Troug scored from third on a fielders choice off the bat of Brooke Vermeys. Jensen later scored on an error.
The Midgets added a run in the bottom of the 4th as Jensen doubled to the right field corner and scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Morgan White to make it 3-1.
Sheldon scored a pair in the top of the 5th to tie the game at 3-3. Bryn Groff led off with a bunt single. One out later McKenzie Wagner singled to right. Tayler Weber followed with a fielders choice that scored Groff. Wagner came in on a single to right by Vanden Hull to tie it up at 3-3 and set the stage for the Midgets game winning run in the 6th inning.
Morgan White pitched 2 innings of no-hit ball in relief of Olivia Troug for the win. She struck out 5 and walked 3. Nicole Johnson went the distance for the Orabs giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits. She struck out 2 and walked 3.
With the win Estherville Lincoln Central moves on to the semis Friday in Boyden with a 15-19 record. Sheldon ends the year at 9-15.
