Iowa City, Iowa (RI) — Friday is Media Day for a largely untested Iowa football team that lost 16 starters from last year’s 9-4 squad.

A total of 49 players on the roster is in their first or second year.

That’s senior tight end Addison Ostrenga, who missed nearly all of last season with an Achilles injury. He is part of what could be the Hawkeyes’ most talented position group.

The competition at quarterback continues during fall camp, with Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown battling to become the starter.

Only three starters return on defense. Senior linebacker Jayden Montgomery says despite the lack of experience, the standard remains.

Montgomery says several new faces will need to step up this season.

Montgomery says that while the defense will be young, there is a lot of talent.

Defensive back Zach Lutmer is the most experienced member of the defense as he begins his fourth year in the program.

As a member of the defense, Lutmer has had an up-close look at the quarterback race.

Lutmer says he is looking forward to the season opener in Kinnick Stadium on September 5th against Northern Illinois.
