Sibley Iowa — Top ranked Unity Christian is headed back to the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament. After finishing second in Class 3A a year ago the Knights are headed back with the 2A title being the goal this year. Unity earned the trip with a dominating 70-32 win over Okoboji in the Region 2 final at the Sibley Ocheyedan Gym Monday night.
After the game Knights head coach Jay Schuiteman talked about getting back to State.
Unity jumped out to a 23-5 first quarter lead on the strength of it’s inside outside game on offense and a smothering defense. After the first quarter came to a close the key became focus.
At the half the lead was up to 43-12 as the Knights rolled to the win. Four of the five starters finished in double figures. Kassidy DeJong led the way with 15. Anna Keil was next with 14. Chanda Zomermaand and Alyssa Fedders added 10 points each. Okoboji was led by Megan Peschong with 9 followed by Emily Wintz with 7.
Schuiteman talked about the balanced scoring that began with Heather Scouten’s corner three that started the scoring and her 9 point night on a trio of threes.
Number 1 Unity will take a 24-0 record into the State Tournament against 21-3 Cascade ranked 13th in the final poll. It will be the first game of the tourney in 2A tipping off at 5 pm Monday March 2nd at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
