Nighthawks Clash With Harlan In State Semifinals Thursday

Boyden Hull Rock Valley takes an 8-2 record into the 3A State Football Semifinals at the UNI Dome Thursday afternoon. They meet #2 Harlan who comes in at 10-0 on the season. Boyden Hull Rock Valley’s road trip to Webster City was worth the 3 hour trip as the Nighthawks came up victorious 23-14 Friday night. The difference in the game was 5 turnovers by Webster City and a turnover on downs inside the Nighthawk 5 yard line. The Nighthawks didn’t commit any turnovers in the contest.

Harlan stayed home and posted a 21-14 win over Lewis Central. The Cyclones took a 14-0 first quarter lead and were up 14-7 at the half. The two teams traded scored in the second half and Harlan got the win to advance to the dome.

Harlan’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Teagon Kasperbaur who has completed 117 of 225 attempts for 2164 yards on the season and 20 touchdown. He’s also rushed for 7 more. The running game is led by senior Brenden Bartley   with 119 carries for 549 yards and 7 scores. On defense junior Will McLaughlin leads the team with 59.5 tackles including 8.5 for a loss, 3 sacks and 1 fumble recovery.

The Nighthawks counter with junior quarterback Caleb Kats whos completed 98 of 201 attempts for 1568 yards and 14 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 102 yards and 4 scores.  The rushing game is keyed by senior Kody Noble with 228 attempts for 1414 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s also has 205 receiving yards and 3 touchdown receptions. Defensively junior Landyn Van Kekerix leads the way with 60 tackles including 2 for a loss. That goes with 1 fumble recovery and a pair of interceptions.

The biggest challenge for the Nighthawks will be controlling a versatile Harlan offense.
