The Sheldon Orabs swept a Siouxland Conference Basketball doubleheader Tuesday night as they hosted Boyden Hull to open the post holiday part of the schedule. The girls game went to Sheldon 46-35. The boys game went to the Orabs 70-60.
In the girls game Sheldon led at all the breaks up 11-4 at the end of the first quarter and they were in front 20-12 at halftime. The Orabs looked to be in control 35-18 headed to the end of the third quarter only to see the Comets score the final six points of the quarter and cut the lead to 35-24 at the end of the third quarter. It was part of a bigger run that got Boyden Hull to within five points in the fourth quarter before the Orabs were able to put it away at the free throw line going 9-of-12 in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.
Sami Kleinwolterink led the offense with 14 points. She was joined by Emily Johnson who hit for 12. The Comets were led by Kaylee Anderson with 11 points on the night.
With the win Sheldon improves to 4-6 on the year and 3-6 in the conference. Boyden Hull drops to 2-7 both on the season and in the conference.
In the boys game it was a tale of two halves with the first half belonging to Boyden Hull and the second half to Sheldon. At the end of the first quarter the Comets were in front 13-12 and led by a point at the half 28-27. After Boyden Hull scored the first two buckets of the second half Sheldon came roaring back to take the lead and pushed the advantage to 52-41 at the end of the third quarter as Andrew Provost hit a right corner three as the buzzer sounded. In the fourth quarter the Orabs were able to hold off a strong Boyden Hull comeback attempt and pick up the win 70-60.
Sheldon was led by Collin Wolthizen who hit for a game high 23 points. Also in double figures were Ian Jongewaard with 11 points and Dylan Ennema with 10. The Comets countered with three of their own in double figures getting 21 from Justin Schmidt, 14 off the bench from Shane Solberg and 10 more from Jamison Te Slaa.
With the win Sheldon improves to 7-2 on the season and 6-2 in the conference. Boyden Hull stands at 5-3 on the year and in the conference. Up next for Sheldon is a Friday trip to Sibley Ocheyhedan while Boyden Hull plays host to Rock Valley on Friday night.
