Sheldon Iowa — Sheldon hosted Sioux Center for the basketball home opener Friday night. It was also opening night for the boys. Sioux Center ranked number 2 in the 3A poll rolled past the Sheldon girls 67-17 while the boys won the opener 62-59 on a last second three from Jaden Kleinhesslink.
In the girls game Sioux Center opened with a 25-6 first quarter lead as they went on to their third win of the year against no losses. Two players hit double figures with Alexis Toering hitting for 16 with Jessica Harald adding 10. All told 11 players found their way into the score book. Sheldon was led by Taylor Weber with 5 points.
In the boys game that followed Sheldon led at all the breaks. They were up 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. The lead remained at 5 at halftime with the Orabs in front 28-23. The margin held up at the end of three as well with Sheldon in front 50-45. In the fourth quarter Sioux Center pulled even and then took the lead early in the quarter. After that the two teams traded shots and the lead the rest of the way. A Jaden Kleinhesslink three from the top of the arc with 5.4 seconds left turned out the be the difference in a 59-59 tie. 62-59 would be the final.
Sheldon got a game high 27 from Kleinhesslink including 6 three-point buckets. Kyle Boerhave hit for 12 with Ryan Van Marel adding 10.
Tyus Arends kept the Warriors in the contest as he dueled with Kleinhesslink hitting for 25 points including 5 three-point buckets. He was joined in double figures by Tyler Van Beek who hit for 15 points in the contest.
With the win Sheldon opens the season 1-0 in the conference. Sioux Center falls to 0-1. Both teams are in action with doubleheaders on the schedule for Saturday. Sioux Center will spend the afternoon at Western Christian with the girls game tipping off at 3:00 as well.
