South O’Brien Downs Sheldon in 2-OT

Sheldon Iowa — It took double overtime but South O’Brien left Sheldon with a 34-28 win Friday night. Cole Tjossem scored on a 3 yard run to put the Wolverines over the top.

Sheldon had the ball first in  overtime and fumbled on their third play. South O’Brien had the ball taken away on their first play of the first overtime. On the first possession of double overtime the Wolverines got the touchdown but failed on the 2-point conversion. Sheldon had an opportunity but fumbled on their first play from scrimmage and South O’Brien got the win.

Big plays put the Wolverines on top early. Parker Struve went 80 yards with the opening kickoff . The extra point was no good and the lead was 6-0 with :13 seconds gone in the game.

A bad snap on an Orab punt set up the Wolverines at the Sheldon 10 yard line. Quarterback Jacob Van Lith scored on a 3 yard run and it was 12-0 with 7:44 left in the first quarter following a failed 2-point attempt.

With Sheldon driving midway through the second quarter Hudson Oolman picked off a pass and went 85 yards for the score. Struve scored on the 2-point conversion and it was 20-0 going into halftime.

Sheldon took the second half kick off and drove 63 yards for the score with Blake Radke hitting Cason Johannes for a 22 yard score. Mathew Meyer added the extra point to cut the lead to 20-7 with 5:33 left in the third.

On the ensuing kick off Sheldon recovered a fumble at the South O’Brien 25 and scored on an 11 yard hook up from Radke to Jacob Anger. Meyer’s extra point made it 20-14 Wolverines with 3:55 left in the third.

The Orabs took the lead with 1:27 left in the third as Radke finished off a 38 yard drive with a 25 yard run. Meyer  added the extra point and Sheldon took the lead 21-20.

South O’Brien regained the lead after recovering a fumbled punt on the Sheldon 43. Cole Tjossem scored the first of his 2 touchdowns on a 15 yard run. He added the 2-point conversion and the Wolverines were back up 28-21 with 9:22 left to play.

Sheldon tied it at 28 with 3:44 left to play as they went 62 yards. Johannes scored on a 15 yard run. Meyer’s extra point was good and with no further scoring the game went into overtime tied at 28-28.

South O’Brien would get the win in double overtime and leave Sheldon with a 34-28 win. The Wolverines will take a 2-0 record into a home game Friday with Hartley Melvin Sanborn. The Orabs take an 0-2 mark into a Friday home date with Sibley Ocheyedan.
