Spencer Iowa — Spencer took both ends of a non conference basketball doubleheader from Sheldon Saturday. The girls game went to the Tigers 70-49 with the boys winning 69-62 at the Field House in Spencer.
The Tigers led at all the breaks in the girls game. They were up 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and pushed that to 40-11 at the half before going on to the win. Keely Petzenhauser led all scorers with a 16 point afternoon followed by Ally Schlaeger with 14. Sheldon was led by Emily Meyer with 10 points as she found double figures for the second game in a row.
With the win Spencer is 7-9 on the year while Sheldon is now 3-14. Sheldon will return to conference play Tuesday night with a trip to Sibley. The Spencer girls finish the season with the first of four road games Spirit Lake on Tuesday.
In the boys game Sheldon had a 12-11 first quarter lead only to see Spencer move in front at the half 35-23. At the end of three the lead was 51-38. In the fourth quarter Sheldon got within five points but that was as close as they could get with Spencer taking full advantage of their free throw opportunities. They hit 12-of-16 in the fourth quarter holding on to get a 69-62 win.
Kyle Boerhave had a game high 23 points followed by Ryan Van Marel with 18. Spencer had three players in double figures led by Brady Kluender with 17 points. Colin Slattery hit for 15 with Chase Hough adding a dozen. Spencer improves to 5-9 with the Orabs falling to 12-4 on the season.
