Sheldon, Iowa — Northwest Iowa Community College student-athletes competed in volleyball, soccer, sports shooting, and men’s golf this past week.
The golf team set a new team school record at the Waldorf Invitational, and Kollyn Wiemers placed second in Saturday’s sports shooting competition.
Volleyball — September 23
The Thunder fell 3-0 to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) but showed signs of improvement. Hitting errors continued to decrease, and the team’s defense improved. Maddie Huisman led NCC with four service aces, added 12 digs and recorded 13 assists.
Soccer — September 23 and 26
Both soccer teams faced NIACC on September 23. The men fell 3-0, and the women fell 4-0. The September 26 games against Iowa Lakes Community College were played in Sheldon. The men fell 8-0, and the women fell 4-0.
Sports Shooting — September 26
The Thunder hosted Iowa Lakes Community College in Sibley. Iowa Lakes won 470-308. Kollyn Wiemers paced NCC with a score of 95 out of 100, placing second in the competition. Madelyn Kelley shot 59 out of 100 and placed third in the women’s competition.
Men’s Golf — September 27
The Thunder set a new team school record of 311 (+23) at the Waldorf Invitational at Wedgewood Cove Golf Course in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Carson Arens led NCC with a two-over-par 74 and tied for fourth among 56 players. Karson Hoogendoorn shot a 76, followed by Cody Snyders with a 78 and Tavin Miller with an 83.
On the JV team, Eli Segar shot a personal-best 80, and Branden Puhrman recorded a personal-best 85. The team handled drizzle and an unfamiliar course well as it continued to improve.
