Western And Unity Split Basketball Doubleheader

Orange City Iowa — Western Christian and Unity Christian split a basketball doubleheader  Monday night in Orange City. The Knights ranked #3 in Class 3A won the girls game 68-32. The boys game went to the Wolfpack 78-60.

The girls game was tight through the first 16 minutes. Western held a 16-15 halftime lead. Unity moved in front 27-23 at halftime. A 10-0 run to start the second half ignited the Unity offense as they moved to a 53-28 third quarter lead. The offense continued to roll and the Knights had their 10th win of the year against just one loss 68-32.

Sophomore Gracie Schoonhoven poured in a game high 38 points to lead all scorers. She had 12 at halftime. Western was led by Sienna Moss with 9 points.

With the win Unity is 10-1 and Western falls to 3-11 on the season.

In the boys game Western led at all the breaks. They were up 19-7 at the end of the first quarter and moved to a 39-22 halftime lead. The wolfpack were able to get up and run in the second half and led 63-43 at the end of three and eventually get their 10th win of the season 78-60.

The Wolfpack put three players in double figures getting a game high 19 from Ty Van Essen. Wyatt Gulker hit for 18 with Ashtin Van’t Hul scoring 10 points off the bench. Unity had three players in double figures as well with Clayton Bosma getting a team high 14. Jacob Van Dong added 13 with Carter De Jong hitting for 10.

With the win Western is 10-3 for the year while Unity stands at 6-5. Both teams are in action Tuesday with Western at Estherville Lincoln Central and Unity hosting Hinton.
