Western Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader With Le Mars

Hull, Iowa — Western split a girl boy doubleheader with Le Mars Thursday night in non-conference action. The Bulldogs won the girls game 44-29 and the Wolfpack would take the boys contest 68-60.

The girls game started off slow for both teams with the first quarter coming to a close with Western leading 6-4. In the second quarter fouls became the story for both squads. Between the two teams there were 33 free throws in the half. Le Mars would push out to a 25-20 advantage at half. In the third quarter the Bulldogs started to pull away with good defense and quick passing on offense to lead 37-25 after thee and went on to post a 44-29 win.

Sarah Brown and Alivia Van Otterloo would each score 13 points to lead the way for the Bulldogs and Madison Vis led the way for the Wolfpack with 11 points.

The Bulldogs moved their record to 2-3 on the season and Western would fall to 2-3 on the year.

The boy’s matchup came out of the gates with a full head steam and ended in a 20 all tie after one quarter. The action continued to be highly contested and Le Mars would pull into the lead by one at the break 32-31. Alec Dreckman from Le Mars had 16 points and Wyatt Gulker from Western had 11 points at the break. The third quarter picked up where the first half left off with a back and forth battle and Western would push out and lead 47-46 after three. In the fourth quarter Ty Van Essen would heat up in the paint and put up 12 of his game high 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Wolfpack would go on and claim the victory 68-60.

Along with Van Essen, Western had 14 points from Wyatt Gulker and 10 from Brayden Van Meeteren. Le Mars had two players in double figures led by Alec Dreckman with 18 and Caleb Dreckman with 16.

Western improves to 4-0 and Le Mars falls to 2-2 on the season.

Western travels to Spencer Friday evening for a Lakes Conference double header and Le Mars will host Heelan Friday.
