Western Splits With Spirit Lake Saturday

Western Christian and Spirit Lake Made up Friday’s postponed basketball double header Saturday afternoon in Spirit Lake. The Indians held on to win the girls game 48-47 while the Wolfpack boys rolled to a 73-44 final.

Spirit Lake jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead in the girls game and were up 26-20 at the half. By the end of three it was 41-34. Western went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead 42-41 only to see the Indians tie it at 44-44. Brooke Smith gave the home team a 48-44 lead late with a field goal and a pair of free throws. Shayla Van Beek hit a three with seconds remaining to make it a one point game in the final seconds but Spirit Lake would hold on for the win 48-47.

Western got a game high 18 from Claire Bleeker. Spirit Lake had three players in double figures led by Taylor Schneider with 14. Smith and Molly Van Dyke scored 11 points each.

With the win the Indians are 7-6 on the year and 2-3 in the conference. Western is now 4-9 for the year and 1-4 in the Lakes.

 

In the boys game the Wolfpack took control early leading 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. The lead was 38-22 at the half and up to 63-33 at the end of the thir quarter as they got the win 73-44.

Four of the five starters ended up in double figures. Wyatt Gaulker and Tate Van Regenmorter hit for 14 apeace with Ashtin Van’t Hul and Ty Van Essen adding 12 points each. Tyler Voss was the lone Spirit Lake player in double figures with 11.

Western is now 11-1 for the year and 2-1 on the season. Spirit Lake is 3-10 for the year and 0-4 in the conference. The Wolfpack return to action Tuesday at home hosting Estherville Lincoln Central the team that handed them their only loss on the year. Spirit Lake is back in action Monday with the boys hosting Worthington and the girls at Waldorf for a game against Charles City.
