Wildcats Fall in 2A Semifinals

Van Meter is headed back to the 2A Baseball championship game. The Bulldogs advanced  with a 3-1 win over West Lyon on Thursday.

Thanks to a dominant pitching effort by Zach Pleggenkuhle the Bulldogs are seeking a second straight state title.

The junior tossed 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in his complete game from the mound, keeping West Lyon’s offense off-balance all game.

Offensively, the Bulldogs saw a 2-for-3 effort from Anthony Potthoff. Teammate Jacob Blomgren finished with a team-best two RBIs.

The bulk of Van Meter’s scoring came in the third, just after West Lyon scored in the top of the inning. The Bulldogs would add one more in the bottom of the fifth to round out their scoring.

Meanwhile, West Lyon was not able to string together any consistent offense. Gavin Lorenzen and Jalyn Gramstad were the only Wildcats to hit safely in the game as Bulldog pitching tossed a two hitter at the Wildcats.

Van Meter will play the winner of Des Moines Christian and North Linn in Saturday’s championship game.

This was West Lyon’s first state tournament appearance since 1996.
