The Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services, has finalized its policy for free and reduced price meals for students unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Special Milk Program and the Afterschool Care Snack Program. Sheldon Girl Scout Troop 314 is having a Cookie Sale from February 1 through March 15. A Pro‑Immigrant Rally hosted by the Sioux County Democrats will take place Monday, February 2 at 5 p.m. in front of the Sioux Center Public Library. This peaceful gathering along Highway 75 is intended to show support for immigrant neighbors, colleagues, students, and classmates. Organizers aim to publicly affirm their presence and rights during a time of uncertainty and to send a message to legislators that mistreatment of immigrants, whether in Minnesota or elsewhere in the country, is unacceptable. The Iowa Democratic Caucuses for people residing in Sioux County will take place Monday, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Sioux Center Public Library. Democrats from all precincts in Sioux County will meet at the library. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and people must be in line or signed in by 7 p.m. to participate. The Sheldon Public Library is hosting balloon pop challenges at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4. Participants will stand in a circle and try to keep the balloons from hitting the floor. If they do not hit the balloon before it hits the floor, they must pop it and do the challenge inside the balloon. For ages 11-16.
The Rock Rapids Christian Reformed Church will have a Soup and Pie Supper Wednesday, February 4th, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids. A Pine Needle Basket Class will be held February 7 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Prairie Woods Nature Center. Participants will learn one of the oldest forms of basket weaving in the world while creating small pine needle baskets. Then, they will have time to enjoy soup and camaraderie over lunch. A $10 supply fee will be paid at the door, and the class is limited to 10 people. Guests are welcome to stay for the full day or drop in for part of it to get started.
The Public Ice Fishing Clinic at Sandy Hollow Recreation Area set for January 31 was rescheduled. The time for the clinic is now set for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7. The Walking Stick Program will take place February 21 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Prairie Woods Nature Center. Ron Oostra of Sioux Center will lead this hands‑on workshop, where participants will receive instruction and begin personalizing their walking stick. Participants may bring their own dried stick (no ash, must be dried for two weeks) or choose from those provided. The lesson covers selecting, personalizing, and treating a walking stick. All supplies are included, and the program is open to all ages; those 14 and under must have an adult helper. The class is limited to 12 people.
