Sanborn Man Who Could Have Faced Over 100 Years In Prison May Be Taking Plea Bargain

Primghar, Iowa — A Sanborn man who could have faced more than a century behind bars looks to be planning on taking a plea bargain.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Hunter Koontz of Sanborn is accused of selling methamphetamine to confidential informants on several occasions in 2025. Deputies say some of the sales took place near schools, parks, and the city’s swimming pool.

Koontz originally faced four counts of drug trafficking, each a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison. He also faced three counts of drug tax stamp violations, Class D felonies that each carried a possible five-year sentence.

Court records indicate a “plea taking and sentencing” is set in the case for Monday, July 27th, 2026. A jury trial had been set to take place in August.
