Drought Moves Out Of Northwest Iowa

Northwest Iowa — The wetter conditions we’ve been experiencing over the past few days and weeks are starting to make an impact on the area’s farmland.

The latest Drought Monitor report for the state of Iowa from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, shows that within the last week, the last remaining patch labeled “moderate drought” in our four-county area of Lyon, Osceola, Sioux, and O’Brien counties has been eliminated. The entire four-county area is now only in the “abnormally dry” category.

The last patch of “moderate drought” had been located in southwestern Sioux County. Two weeks ago, all of western Lyon and Sioux counties were in “moderate drought.” That patch had been there since at least April, and before then, it was bigger and drier. At the end of March, all but the eastern half of our area was under “severe drought.”

Roughly a third of the state is currently listed as at least abnormally dry.
