Boyden, Sheldon Firefighters Fight Barn Fire Saturday

Boyden, Iowa — A barn and some farm items were damaged in a fire on Saturday, March 23, 2024, near Boyden.

According to Boyden Fire Chief Chris Starkenburg, at about 9:20 a.m., the Boyden Fire Department was called to the report of a barn fire at 4070 320th Street, on Highway 18, just east of Boyden.

The chief says the fire department saw the barn fully engulfed, with the roof already gone as they approached the scene. A pile of trees nearby was on fire too. However, Starkenburg says the barn had been lit on fire intentionally, but initially without the help of the fire department.

Starkenburg says no injuries were reported to people, pets, or livestock. He says firefighters basically just protected the other buildings and items nearby.

The fire department was assisted by the Sheldon Fire Company.

He says a farmer from a nearby farm came and assisted with a payloader as well.

Chief Starkenburg reports that a single-stall garage started on fire, but was saved, and some feed bunkers for hogs were damaged in the blaze.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours.
