Sheldon, Iowa — A barn and the livestock inside were destroyed in a fire on Monday, March 25, 2024, near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, at about 4:25 p.m., the Sheldon Fire Company was called to the report of a barn fire at 3097 Log Avenue, two miles west and a mile north of the Sheldon Motel.

The chief says the fire department saw the barn completely burned down as they approached the scene. He says firefighters protected the surrounding area around the barn and then worked on extinguishing the barn and the large amount of hay that had been in the barn. They used both water and foam.

Chief Hindt reports that the barn was a total loss. Also lost in the fire were about 17 goats and 36 chickens.

The fire department was assisted by the Boyden Fire Department, SCAT, and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office.

He says the cause of the fire is undetermined, but it was most likely caused by a heating lamp as the owner stated that he just had baby goats last week and was keeping them warm.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about two hours and 35 minutes.
