West Okoboji, Iowa -– A drowning Saturday in Miller’s Bay of West Lake Okoboji claimed the life of a Cedar Rapids man.
The Arnolds Park/Okoboji Dive Team identifies the victim as 21-year-old Alexander Glover. Authorities say Glover was boating with family members and decided to jump off for a swim. They say the boat then drifted away from Glover, who was trying to swim back to it but became fatigued in the 57-degree water. Family members attempted to throw a rope toward Glover but he was too far away. A kayaker who happened to be in the area, Charles Anderegg, was able to dive down from his kayak and brought Glover, who was about 13 feet below water, to the surface. Family members immediately began performing CPR on Glover. The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue Dive Team arrived via their fire boat and transported Glover to shore to an awaiting ambulance. He was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare where further efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The incident took place a little before 1:30 pm Saturday.
Officials say Glover was in the lakes area vacationing with family members.
