Fire That Destroyed Vehicles, Most Of Building Fought By Four Fire Departments

Harris, Iowa — Two vehicles and most of a shed were destroyed in a fire on Sunday, February 20, 2022, near Harris.

According to Lake Park Fire Chief Brandon Ehret, about 3:30 p.m., the Lake Park Fire Department was called to the report of a barn fire at 1131 100th Avenue, two miles east and three north of Harris.

The chief says the fire department saw two-thirds of the building was already on the ground as they approached the scene. He says they used mainly an external defensive attack to fight the fire.

Ehret says no injuries were reported.

Along with the Lake Park Fire Department, the Harris, Ocheyedan, and Round Lake fire departments also helped fight the fire.

He says the cause of the fire appears to have been electrical in nature. They’re wondering if maybe it might have been connected to the standby generator in the building.

Chief Ehret reports that the front shop area of the building is still standing, but the rear storage area was destroyed, along with a grain truck, a side-by-side UTV, a lawnmower, and more. He says it was good that the building was fairly isolated. The fire didn’t really threaten any other buildings.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
