Hospers And Hartley Firefighters Fight Two Farm Fires

Hospers, Iowa — A grain dryer and some corn were damaged in a fire on Thursday, October 19, 2023, near Hospers.

According to Hospers Fire Chief Jason Overmole, at about 7:50 p.m., the Hospers Fire Department was called to the report of a grain dryer fire at 3722 Larch Avenue, a mile and a half west and two and three quarters north of Hospers.

The chief says the fire department saw light smoke in the area of the grain bin as they approached the scene. He says the dryer and a small corner of the bin part of the dryer were involved in the fire and a small amount of corn was also ruined in the blaze.

Overmole says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Granville Fire Department per their auto-aid agreement.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be an electric motor malfunction.

Chief Overmole reports that there was moderate damage to the grain dryer.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 45 minutes.

On Tuesday afternoon, Hartley firefighters were called to the report of a field fire near structures at 6650 340th Street. That’s about a mile and a half straight south of Hartley.

Fire Chief Brad Meendering tells us a bearing had gone out on a combine, and the hot parts started some corn on fire. He says it burned about an acre of corn, but there was no other damage. Firefighters were on that fire scene for about 30 minutes.
