Rock Rapids, George Firefighters Called To Garage Fire In Rock Rapids

UPDATE: Rock Rapids, Iowa — A garage was damaged in a fire on Monday, February 1, 2021, in Rock Rapids.

According to Rock Rapids Fire Chief Ed Reck, about 9:50 a.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of a garage fire at 310 North Story Street in northern Rock Rapids near the city swimming pool.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke coming from the eaves and vents as they approached the scene.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in the garage’s wall heater. He tells us they turned off the electricity and gas and used water to fight the fire.

Reck says no injuries were reported.

He tells us that the George Fire Department was also paged as the two fire departments automatically respond to structure fire calls in the other town, but their assistance wasn’t needed this time.

Chief Reck reports that while the building doesn’t look bad from the outside, it’s going to take “quite a little to fix it up.” He says luckily there wasn’t much in the building except for a grill.

He tells us the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
