Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Fire Company was called out around 7:20 Tuesday morning to a blaze at the Northwest Iowa Landfill, located south of Sheldon.
According to Assistant Chief Brad Hindt, the fire was in burning garbage on top of the hill. He says firefighters stood by as landfill employees used heavy equipment to move and cover the burning garbage.
Hindt says firefighters used a combination of water and foam to hit hot spots. He says landfill employees then covered the garbage with more dirt to cap the fire areas.
Firefighters blame the blaze on hot embers and burned wood that was deposited in the garbage.
Hindt reports that the department was back in service at 9:45 Tuesday morning, after cleaning their equipment and trucks.
