Sioux Center Man Taken To Hospital After Crash There

Sioux Center, Iowa– A Sioux Center man was taken to the hospital after an accident there on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

The Sioux Center Police Department reports that a few minutes before 3:00 p.m., 14-year-old Melaku Van Voorst of Northfield, MN was driving a 2020 Chevy pickup owned by his grandfather, Richard Dykstra of Sioux Center, southbound on 13th Avenue Southeast, on the southeast side of Sioux Center. They tell us that 84-year-old Henry Kroon of Sioux Center was northbound on 13th Avenue Southeast in a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica.

The report says that Van Voorst slowed for the driveway, but was directed by his grandfather to proceed to the next one. They tell us Kroon was northbound on 13th Avenue SE and was distracted by the construction in the neighborhood, and allegedly failed to yield the right of way upon making a left turn into the private driveway, causing a collision.

The Sioux Center Ambulance took Kroon to Sioux Center Health Hospital.

Both Dykstra’s Chevy pickup and Kroon’s Chrysler Pacifica sustained disabling damage in the mishap.

Dykstra was cited on a charge of permitting an unauthorized minor to drive and Kroon was cited for failure to yield upon left turn.
