Struble Man Airlifted After Rear-Ending Manure Wagon Near Maurice

Maurice, Iowa — A Struble man was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital as the result of an accident on Wednesday morning, November 22nd, 2023.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, at a few minutes before 8:50 a.m., 77-year-old Wayne Brink of Maurice, was driving a 1989 Case IH tractor and pulling a loaded manure wagon northbound on Grant Avenue, two miles northwest of Maurice. They tell us that 27-year-old Cody Berkenpas of Struble was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, also northbound on Grant Avenue, behind Brink, when he struck the manure wagon. The impact pushed the Brink farm vehicle into the west ditch and the Berkenpas pickup into the east ditch.

Berkenpas was transported by the Sioux Center Ambulance to Sioux Center Health. He was later flown to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls for further medical treatment. Brink reported minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to Orange City Area Health.

The pickup sustained approximately $25,000 in damage; The tractor and wagon sustained an estimated $30,000 in damage.

Berkenpas was cited on charges of failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle, failure to stop within assured clear distance, and failure to use seatbelt.
