Sunday Afternoon Crash Sends 9 To Hospital

Ritter, Iowa — Nine people, including five children, were taken to the hospital for injuries received in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon at the Ritter corner.

According to the accident report from the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened shortly after 3:20 Sunday afternoon when a 2011 GMC Yukon, driven by 40-year-old Evan Anema of Sioux Falls was west bound on 280th Street at the stop sign at the intersection with Northwest Boulevard. Deputies say Anema proceeded west into the intersection, into the path of a southbound 2008 Chevrolet Pickup, driven by 28-year-old Justin Van Grootheest of Sioux Center.

Van Grootheest, along with one adult and one juvenile passenger, were taken to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team. Anema, as well as one adult and four juvenile passengers, were also transported by SCAT to Sanford Sheldon.

Damage to Anema’s SUV were estimated at $20,000, while Van Grootheest’s pickup sustained an estimated $15,000 in damage.

Deputies reportedly cited Anema for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way.
