Larchwood, Iowa — A South Dakota man was arrested following the report of a traffic crash that happened southwest of Larchwood in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
According to court documents, a Lyon County Deputy responded to the report of a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of 180th Street and Beech Avenue, near the South Dakota border. The reporting party told dispatchers that the driver had walked off, and into a farmstead.
Court records reveal that by the time the deputy arrived on the scene, the man had returned to the accident scene. And, as the deputy put it, “was standing in the ditch, trying to hide behind his pickup.”
According to court records, while the deputy was talking to the man, who authorities identify as 23-year-old Jayden VanZee of Platte, South Dakota, he identified a strong odor of alcohol.
VanZee was arrested, and charged with Felony OWI. Authorities say VanZee had at least two OWI convictions in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, which elevated the Iowa OWI charge to felony status.
