Two Fire Calls In Hartley’s District Monday

Hartley, Iowa– The Hartley Fire Department responded to not one but two calls on Monday, December 12, 2022. And they were just barely done with one call when the other one came in.

According to Hartley Fire Chief Brad Meendering, just before 9:30 p.m., the Hartley Fire Department was called to the report of smoke in a home at 211 N. Central Avenue, in Hartley.

The chief says the fire department experienced a smell and a light haze when they got there. They found that the condensation pump for the furnace had malfunctioned and overheated, melting the pump.

Meendering says no injuries were reported.

Chief Meendering reports that the damage was limited to the condensation pump.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene 20 minutes.

As they were finishing up, they got a call to 3519 Tyler Avenue, two miles south and two west of Hartley, where it was said there was a small shop fire.

Meendering says they pulled up to find the northwest corner of the shop on fire in the attic area, with flames and embers visable. He says that corner of the shop is where the oil burner is, so they assume that had something to do with the fire.

He says they put out the flames and did some overhaul. He tells us that there’s probably $20,000 to $25,000 in damage. Meendering says they were on that scene for about two hours, and no injuries were reported.
