High Winds Topple Trucks, Trailers (with photo and video)

Northwest Iowa — Thursday’s high winds played havoc with people driving high-profile vehicles around the area, including one Orange City man.

Shortly after 10:00 Thursday morning, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred on Kingbird Avenue, four miles west of Hospers.

According to authorities, 70-year-old Robert De Haan, of Orange City, was driving a 2020 Ford F-150 pickup pulling a 2022 EBY Livestock trailer northbound on Kingbird Avenue. Deputies say De Haan encountered a high gust of wind that picked the trailer up, causing the trailer and vehicle to roll onto Kingbird Avenue.

De Haan reported minor injuries and declined further medical treatment after medical attention provided by Hospers EMTs.

The F-150 and trailer sustained an estimated $55,000 in damage.

We’ve heard reports of several semis being toppled by the wind in the tri-state area of northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota and southeast South Dakota Thursday morning, including one that was captured on video and shared with KIWA.

That incident occurred about 11:15 Thursday morning, on Highway 60 near the Iowa-Minnesota state line, when a semi was hit by a wind gust that flipped the tractor and trailer onto its side, with the rig coming to rest in the median ditch.

Word is that the driver was uninjured in that incident, which was captured on video by Brenna Anema. She reports that immediately after the mishap, at least 10 motorists stopped to render aid to the truck’s driver.

That video can be viewed below. Thanks to Brenna Anema for providing KIWA the footage of that incident…….
