Hospers Firefighters Respond To Two Calls In Two Days

Hospers, Iowa — The Hospers Fire Department was called out twice in two days this week.

According to Hospers Fire Chief Jason Overmole, about 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18th, the Hospers Fire Department was called to the report of smoke alarms going off at Sunrise Homes, an apartment complex on Hospers’ east side.

When they got there, all the residents had been evacuated.

The chief says the fire department found that a motor in an air handling system burned up and filled the building with smoke. He says the fire was contained to the unit and ductwork, and smoke damage was contained to a mechanical room. He says they ventilated the building and residents were back in their apartments within an hour and a half.

Overmole says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Granville Fire Department.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in the air handler.

Chief Overmole says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour and 15 minutes.

But, he tells us they were called out again the next day — Thursday at about 3:45 p.m. for a grass fire at the town tree dump. He says the pile had been lit last week, but the strong winds stoaked up the embers and some grass caught on fire. He says only some patches of grass burned, and he tells us they had it put out in 20 minutes.
