Rock Rapids Man Faces Felony OWI Charge

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man has been arrested on a felony OWI charge after an incident near that town.

A criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office says 31-year-old Alex Ohling of Rock Rapids is accused of taking his parents’ side-by-side ATV and crashing it while drunk. He was arrested on Saturday.

In his statement, the deputy says they were called to make sure that Ohling was OK, as he was said to have taken his parents side by side and to have driven away after drinking, without his parents’ permission to use the ATV.

The deputy says that while officers were searching for Ohling, they found that he had wrecked the ATV and left it there after being picked up by a friend.

Ohling declined all sobriety tests, but the deputy says he showed several signs of intoxication, and there was other evidence that he had been drinking.

Ohling was charged with OWI, third or subsequent offense, a class D felony. If convicted, Ohling could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of driving without the owner’s consent, failure to maintain control, and reckless driving.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 13th.

At last report, he remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids.
