Pair Of Area Fire Calls Friday

Northwest Iowa — A pair of fire calls Friday drew fire departments from three northwest Iowa communities.

The Hartley Fire Department was called to the report of a fire in the ceiling of a hog barn at 2950 Wilson Avenue. Hartley Fire Chief Brad Meendering tells KIWA that there was no fire. Meendering says the hog building is undergoing remodeling, and the dust tripped a sensor, resulting in the false alarm.

At 3:50 Friday afternoon, Ireton and Hawarden fire crews were dispatched for a structure fire at 403 West Street in Ireton. Richard Steckelberg is Ireton’s fire chief, and he says a resident of that address had been running a power washer when a circuit breaker blew. He says the resident reset the circuit breaker, after which smoke was seen coming from an electrical outlet.

Steckelberg says firefighters had to tear out some carpeting and take the basement ceiling down to gain access. He says the home saw very minor damage from the fire and smoke.
