Spencer, Iowa — One person is dead in the aftermath of a house fire in Spencer Thursday.
Spencer Deputy Fire Chief Mark Stover says firefighters were summoned to a residence on East 1st Street in Spencer shortly after 8:00 Thursday morning, and were told that an occupant of the home might possibly still be inside.
When the fire department arrived on scene firefighters encountered fire showing in the front and rear of the residence. According to Stover, one victim was located in the residence and was confirmed deceased when firefighters reached them. He says the name of the victim is being withheld pending an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner and family notifications.
Deputy Chief Stover says the residence suffered heavy fire damage throughout, except one room where the door was closed.
Stover says the fire is still under investigation at this time.
