Archer, Iowa — A round baler was destroyed and a farm tractor was damaged in a fire on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, near Archer.
According to Assistant Archer Fire Chief Brian Vollink, about 1:55 p.m., the Archer Fire Department was called to the report of a baler on fire near 3967 Oak Hill Avenue, two miles south, two miles west, and a half a mile south of Archer.
The chief says the fire department saw the round baler fully engulfed, one of the tires of the tractor on fire, and part of the cab on fire as well as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.
Vollink says no injuries were reported. He says Archer firefighters were assisted by the Sheldon Fire Company.
Vollink tells us the cause of the fire is undetermined but it was believed to be due to a malfunction in the baler.
Assistant Chief Vollink reports that the older baler was totaled, and he estimates the tractor probably sustained between five and ten thousand dollars in damage.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about an hour.
