$8,000,000 Cut In State Spending Plan For U of I, ISU, UNI

Statewide Iowa — Student government leaders at Iowa’s three public universities say the legislature’s decision to cut eight MILLION dollars from Iowa, Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa is short-sighted and deeply disappointing.

Senator Eric Giddens, a Democrat from Cedar Falls, is also raising objections to the GOP’s spending plan for UNI.

(As above) “UNI is a rare gem in our state,” Giddens says. “It produces graduates that not only become some of the best educators and entrepreneurs in the world but, more important, they stay in Iowa after graduation.”

A recent survey found 85 percent of UNI graduates wind up living in Iowa. Other Democrats in the legislature suggested the Board of Regents may decide to hike tuition for the winter semester to make up for the budget reduction. Republicans say budget adjustments had to be made to deal with the economic hit of the pandemic.
